As the Division Chief and Director of Developmental Medicine at UCSF, I was excited to work with Dr. Kirstin Aschbacher as a Data Scientist with deep knowledge of psychobiology to help us discover Precision Care biomarkers of treatment response in a racially and socioeconomically diverse study of mothers and children seeking family treatment for interpersonal trauma. Dr. Aschbacher is a brilliant theorist, deeply rooted in the evidence base and latest methodologies, but able to think ahead and outside of the box in critical ways to advance the field. Through our work together, we were able to identify biomarkers associated with trauma in early life and pregnancy, which we discovered also predicted patient treatment outcomes. Her insights and expertise led our team to great success—we were able to publish a series of 3 papers in highly regarded peer-reviewed medical journals. One of these has even been featured by Mass General Hospital/Harvard's Center for Women's Mental Health. Moreover, these findings have supported a range of other scientific inquiries and funding opportunities for both federal and private dollars.
